Could "Big Oil" Be a Reason for the War on Afghanistan?

by John Paul Jones

Within two weeks of the 9/11 attack, our government supposedly went from knowing zero percent to knowing 100 percent about the perpetrators even though all of the known attackers were dead. There is a very strong likelihood that most, if not all of the "evidence" about the attack came from the Israeli MOSSAD. The Israelis of course are notorious for supplying us with misinformation. Naturally they are going to try to convince us that the top men on their "most wanted" list just happen to be responsible for the attack on the World Trade Center.

To prove this point, President Bush is now seriously talking about another war against Iraq even though no one has seriously suggested that Saddam Hussein had anything to do with the World Trade Center bombings. This would be like a judge giving you the death penalty because you lived in the same neighborhood as a murderer.

The chief suspect in the 9/11 attack is Osama bin Laden. (The Jewish press has changed his first name to "Usama" since this was probably poll-tested and found to be less popular than "Osama.") There are several operations that bin Laden reportedly was supporting. The Taliban in Afghanistan reportedly was one organization that got his financial support. This raises the question "Do we have the right to annihilate a foreign political organization because of guilt by association?" If a new terrorist blew up a skyscraper in France and had also heavily funded the Democrat Party would the French be justified in declaring war against the Democrats? (Don't let the image of Hillary being sent to the guillotine cloud your judgment.)

Osama bin Laden is a billionaire. He may spend some of his time in Afghanistan, but like most billionaires, he travels the world and no doubt has several homes around the world. As soon as he was blamed for the 9/11 attack, it can be safely assumed that bin Laden rushed to the nearest plastic surgeon, had his face completely redone and assumed a new identity in a nation like Iran, where the CIA and MOSSAD would have a hard time searching for him.

Osama bin Laden most likely fled Afghanistan days, if not weeks, before U.S. carriers positioned themselves to launch an attack. Afghanistan, however, was an easy target for the U.S. to attack. No major power cares about that nation, and American women would tend to support the war since women were second class citizens under the Taliban. Perhaps the war on Afghanistan had a lot more to do with oil than bin Laden's association with the Taliban.

Afghanistan has an estimated 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, this and its close proximity to the Central Asian reserve is extremely important. In 1997 a major American oil company, Unocal, was having trouble getting rights to build a pipeline across Afghanistan. The Taliban preferred that an Argentine oil company, Bridas, build a major pipeline across their country instead of Unocal. Unocal had successfully blocked Bridas from getting rights to extend the proposed pipeline from Afghanistan into neighboring Turkmenistan (illustrating the complex, ruthless maneuvers that these companies engage in). One news article from 1997 reported that "Nov. 5, 1997 Hearings are still going on in a lawsuit of Argentine oil and gas firm Bridas S.A.. against Unocal Corp. The case -- in which Bridas is seeking $15 bn in damages -- centres on the Argentine firm's allegations that Unocal interfered in its operations in the former Soviet republic of Turkmenistan. Those operations include plans to build a natural gas pipeline from Turkmenistan through war-torn Afghanistan to the growing energy market in Pakistan." (Ref. 1)

So a multi-billion dollar pipeline deal and a major American oil company Unocal were being thwarted by the Taliban. Does this suggest that a war to get rid of the Taliban may have been a huge factor to Big Oil? Could bin Laden's association with the Taliban have been used as an excuse to wipe out the Taliban and make a multi-billion dollar oil deal possible for Big Oil? (Even the two week delay in starting the war may have been a negotiating period to make sure that the Northern Alliance was willing to sign a secret deal with Unocal.)

The war against Afghanistan has not captured bin Laden. It has only wiped out the Taliban. Most of the suicide bombers in the 9/11 attack came from Saudi Arabia and Egypt, not Afghanistan. There isn't any proof that the Taliban warlords in Afghanistan had any significant ties to the World Trade Center bombing. The American public, however, were awed by the fearsome destruction inflicted upon the Taliban in Afghanistan. Clearly we were "getting even" for the attack on the World Trade Center. Or were we putting on a fireworks display for the naive, flag-waving middle Americans, who demanded revenge, and in reality exploiting an opportunity to make "the mother of all Big Oil deals" for the Big Oil friends of Bush and Cheney?
