California has sentenced over 6,700 career criminals to 25 year minimum jail terms under its "Three Strikes You're Out" law. Violent crime has dropped as an obvious, direct result. Many states have recently passed get-tough-on-crime laws that give the death penalty for murderers and long jail sentences for rapists. Pedophiles, however, appear to be released after surprisingly short sentences. Unlike violent offenders, who become less violent with old age, many pedophiles continue to molest children into their old age. Pedophiles often molest multiple victims before they are caught. They intimidate their young victims into remaining silent. The apparent leniency toward pedophiles in our society is an outrage. The most likely explanation for this leniency is that a significant percentage of pedophiles are homosexuals (Ref. 1) and liberals don't want a large percentage of their "Gay" friends imprisoned for life for crimes against children.
Pedophiles could be spotted early if police would closely monitor who e-mails or downloads child pornography from the Internet. Every individual caught engaging in this illegal activity should be thoroughly investigated to determine if they have access to children. The names of individuals caught with child pornography should be added to lists of sex offenders that the general public can check. Three convictions for child pornography should be sufficient to send these criminals to jail permanently. It may be possible to prevent thousands of acts of child molestation from occurring by imprisoning people, who repeatedly are caught with child pornography.
A truly horrible story of child molestation has come out of Montana. An individual named David Bar-Jonah, who earlier had almost strangled a boy to death, was turned loose on society and is now suspected of multiple molestations of little boys and of cannibalizing at least one of his victims. (Ref. 2) This individual was clearly guilty of assault and possibly attempted murder from the earlier incident, but he was not given a lengthy prison sentence. Leniency allowed him to commit even more horrible crimes.
A recent story out of San Diego describes an incident in which the van Dam family had their seven year old daughter kidnapped. The main suspect in the case is a neighbor, David Westerfield. Child pornography was discovered in Westerfield's home according to police and Westerfield is the focus of the investigation. (Ref. 3) Westerfield made a trip to the desert shortly after the girl's disappearance, where many suspect he disposed of the child's body.
A second story out of California has an Orange County judge, Ronald Kline, caught possessing child pornography. (Ref. 4) Some of the pornography was found on his office computer and he may have been viewing it while hearing civil court cases. A document in "diary form" has been found in which Kline describes his attraction to one little boy. The judge has not been fired from his position and is still receiving his salary even though criminal charges have been filed against him.
Our society is clearly too lenient toward pedophiles. If more severe actions were taken against individuals, who download child pornography or who have assaulted or molested children in the past, many future incidents could be avoided. It would benefit society if a "One Strike You're Out" policy were adopted for anyone convicted of child molestation or attempted murder of a child. A large percentage of child molestation is committed by homosexuals. Liberal tolerance of and support for homosexuals may be responsible for the ridiculous leniency toward child molesters that allows many of them to return to society to molest more children.
