Ground Zero Statue Goes Politically Correct

by James Buchanan

One of the greatest images out of World War Two was the raising of a large American flag on Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima. Americans were just naturally inspired to see soldiers raising an American flag in the midst of a brutal battle with a stubborn enemy force. A similar, powerful image occurred on September 11th, when three firefighters, whose work had been briefly interrupted for safety concerns, found a U.S. flag and raised it on a flagpole that was sticking up out of the rubble. The photo appeared on the front pages of newspapers and on the evening news. The photo can be found at: http://www.northjersey.com/index/groundzerospirit.html

A statue was made of the Marines, who rose the flag on Mount Suribachi. That statue was based on the photograph, and the men in the photo were accurately portrayed. Now, politicians have decided to build a statue of the flag-raising at the World Trade Center. The big difference however is that, even though we have a clear photograph of the men, who raised the flag, the statue will not represent those men because THEY WERE ALL WHITE!! Instead, a politically correct statue has been designed that will have one Latino, one Black, and one White firefighter in place of the true flag raisers.

According to the New York Daily News, the New York Fire Department was 93.9% White in 1999. As usual, minorities have been screaming that this reflects racism even though every applicant must satisfy the same requirements and take the same test. Liberals have resorted to their usual tactic of lowering standards in the face of continued minority failure to try to change this. A New York court even ruled that a physical agility test (which involved moving a pressurized fire hose 150 feet in less than four minutes) was not job-related and unfairly discriminated against a female Latino, who was trying to become a fireman. A statue of three White firemen not only reflects the actual identities of the men, who raised the flag, it is also accurate in terms of the demographics of the New York Fire Department despite attempts to lower standards and bring in more minorities. Liberals don't want to admit that the best men for this difficult job are overwhelmingly White.

As things stand now, the liberal politicians are getting their way to revise history and create a multi-racial statue. Of course, why should we stop with a Black, Latino, and White? If we are not going to constrain ourselves with historical reality, why not change the number of firemen so that we can include women, Asians, Gays, blind people, and a fireman in a wheelchair? In fact, we could make the statue politically correct for the animal rights advocates too. We could have twenty or so "Rainbow Coalition" firemen raising the flag with the help of a dolphin and a whale!! I'm sure Senator Hillary would approve.
